Horizontal Sliding Aluminium Windows

Aluminium windows with sashes that slide sideways within the frame. Nothing projects past the wall, which makes them a neat fit beside paths, patios and passages.

How sliding windows work

A horizontal sliding window has two or more sashes in a frame with parallel tracks. One sash slides across the other, much like a small sliding door. Nothing swings in or out, so the window takes up no space when it is open.

With two sashes, the most you can open is about half the window. Some layouts have a fixed centre pane with a sliding sash on either side.

Where sliding windows make sense

  • Next to paths, braai areas and patios, where an outward-opening sash would be in the way
  • Narrow side passages between houses
  • Wide, low windows, such as above a kitchen counter
  • Rooms where you want to open the window with one hand

What to weigh up

  • Only part of the window opens at a time, so you get less air than from a side hung window of the same size.
  • The bottom track collects dust and sand. Clean it now and then so the sash keeps running smoothly.
  • Burglar bars can go inside or outside, since the sash moves within the frame.

Comparing the other styles

Side hung windows open fully for the most air, and top hung windows can stay open in light rain. Our article on choosing an aluminium window style sets out where each one works best.

Sliding window questions

Do sliding windows let in less air?

Yes, for the same size of window. Only one sash opens at a time, so at most about half the window is open.

Can sliding windows replace old steel windows?

Yes. The new frame is supplied to the measured size of the opening and fitted in place of the old one, and the plaster is made good around it.

Are sliding windows hard to keep clean?

No, but the bottom track does gather grit. A quick brush or vacuum keeps the sash running smoothly.
