How top hung windows work
The sash is hinged along its top edge and pushes outward from the bottom. Friction stays hold it at whatever angle you leave it. Open, the sash leans out over the gap like a small awning, so light rain runs off the glass instead of coming in.
Top hung sashes are often used as vents above fixed glass or above a side hung sash, but a whole window can be made up of top hung sashes too.

Good places for top hung windows
- Bathrooms and toilets, where you want air as well as privacy. Obscure glass can be fitted.
- Kitchens, to let steam out over the sink or stove
- High windows and vents above doors
- Any room where you want some air on a drizzly winter day
A top hung sash does not open as wide as a side hung one. For the most air in a bedroom or living room, look at side hung windows.
Top hung window questions
Can I leave a top hung window open in the rain?
In light rain, yes, because the sash shelters the opening. Close it when heavy rain is driven by the wind.
Do top hung windows work with burglar bars?
Yes. The sash opens outward, so bars fitted on the inside do not get in the way.
Can top hung windows have obscure glass?
Yes. Obscure glass is a common choice for bathrooms and toilets, and it can be specified pane by pane.
