Shop front problems we repair
A shop front entrance door opens and closes many times a day, so its closer, pivots and lock work much harder than any door at home. When one of them fails, the door becomes a security and safety problem. Typical faults include:
- The door slams, swings too fast or will not close by itself
- The door drops, scrapes the floor or sticks in the frame
- The lock will not engage, or the key is hard to turn
- A handle or push bar is loose or broken
- A cracked or broken glass panel
- Gaps, draughts or water coming in around the door or panels

What usually causes it
Door closers and floor springs
Shop front doors are controlled by an overhead door closer or a floor spring set into the floor. These are hydraulic, and as they wear or leak they lose control of the door, which then slams or will not close. They are adjusted where possible and replaced when they are worn out.
Pivots and hinges
A heavy glazed door hangs on its pivots or hinges. Wear makes the door drop and catch on the floor or frame. Worn parts are replaced and the door is re-hung so it swings freely.
Locks and handles
A door that has dropped no longer lines up with its lock. Re-setting the door often solves it; a worn lock, cylinder or handle is replaced.
Glass panels
Shop front panels are large and reach down to floor level, so replacement glass must be safety glass under SANS 10400 Part N. The glass type and thickness depend on the size of the panel.
How a shop front repair works
Tell us what is wrong, where the premises are and, if you can, send a photo with your quote request. If the premises cannot be locked, say so when you contact us. We come out, find the cause and quote before any work starts, and the work can be planned around your trading hours.
Quotations are free. A call-out fee of R200 applies only if you do not accept the quote.
Replacement parts carry their suppliers’ warranties. On older shop front systems an exact matching part is not always available. If that is the case, we will explain the options before you decide.
Repair or replace?
Most shop front faults are in the door hardware and can be repaired. When the framing is badly damaged or corroded, or you want to change the layout, a new shop front may be the better investment. See aluminium shop fronts for new installations.
For homes, see sliding door repairs, window repairs and all aluminium door and window repairs.
